Understanding common cold
Common colds are infections of the upper respiratory
tract. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, sore throat,
a blocked or runny nose.
Common cold is often accompanied by a temporarily weakened
immune system. On one hand, this may allow viruses to
attack the body, on the other hand it is also a frequent
cause of such an infection. There are more than 200
different viruses that can cause common colds.
Secondary bacterial infection may sometimes follow,
which aggravate symptoms and prolong the illness. Hence
doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics to overcome
the bacteria.
Factors that might increase the susceptibility of getting
infection by cold viruses include psychological stress
and allergic diseases that affect the first protective
barrier. i.e. the epithelial cell lining of the nose
and throat.

Complications of common colds
During an episode of a common cold, the viral infection
may further weaken the immune system, allowing facultatively
pathogenic bacteria that are normally present on the
surface of the respiratory tract to invade the body
hence producing a symptomatic co-infection.
Other common complications are sinus infections or
middle ear infections (especially in children)
If you have underlying asthma or chronic bronchitis,
your usually mild symptoms of these conditions may be
worsened and prolonged for many weeks even after your
cold stopped.
